When protests move into public spaces and take root there, blockading, defending, or seizing these spaces, they produce protest architecture. The film “Protest/Architecture”, which consists entirely of archive material, captures the essence of twelve powerful protest movements between 1968 and 2023 in five condensed chapters. The energetic montage emphasizes the structural bonds and similarities between the protests in occupying public spaces, living in self-created temporary structures, and resisting their eviction and destruction by the police or the army. A large part of the archive material comes from activists and filmmakers in solidarity with the protest movements, giving the audience a unique and empathetic perspective on the events. The choice of images, the montage, and the soundtrack emphasize the power of mass protests against oppression and social injustice.
A part of our DESIGNING RESISTANCE film week in collaboration with City Fabrick. This collection of films focus on the man ways art, design and creation can be used to fight systems of oppression.
This visual art piece runs 16m, and will begin every 20m during the two hour showtime window.
